A Balanced Life: "Critics and Mentors"

"Watching the tennis competition in Paris, I have been struck by how often the players are "talking to themselves" - a lot! I would watch their body language, particularly their facial expressions, and I realized that they were responding to an inner voice, and I wondered, Is it the voice of their inner critic or their inner mentor? I believe that I could tell when it was their inner critic speaking - they would express anger (screaming, yelling, hitting self) and when it was their inner mentor, they remained attentive and focused. I suspect that their wise, inner mentor could be the voice of one of their parents, coaches, counsellor or their own compassionate self. Some folks seem to have been able to strengthen their inner mentor, to the extent that the critic's voice is muffled or faded and they choose to listen to the mentor and not respond to the critic.

Seems to me, everyone could benefit from practicing listening only to their inner mentor."
